THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG

Our poor choice of food and lack of physical activity are fueling a variety of chronic illnesses like diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, heart disease, and cancer. These diseases could be thought of as the tip of an iceberg because they all form in the same auspicious waters. We could also say that like icebergs, they incubate or grow for a long time before surfacing. Most of the iceberg remains an invisible interconnected mass underwater.

When laboratory findings pick up high sugar, high cholesterol, a silent heart attack, or a cancerous growth they trigger the use of an array of drugs, impressive technology, and targeted expertise! All good but for one deadly fault - the context.

Institutions pride themselves in exterminating one disease turning a blind eye on another! How could we explain serving eggs as part of the first meal after cardiac surgery? We find fried foods in the cafeteria of a cancer hospital and hot dogs at the children’s hospital while adults are scoped for colon cancer next door.

Abundant scientific evidence links our choice of foods and disease. The missing link is to our standard medical care.
